Little Haiku Hands
Tiny hand grips hard—
we glide the page together:
a name emerges.
I teach 3- and 4-year-olds how to speak English. One of our school’s goals is to get them to also write their names.
We practice how to hold pencils, crayons, markers, paint brushes, and color pencils.
We practice how to make different kinds of lines.
We practice tracing our names in capital letters and lowercase letters.
We even practice writing our names with a little help from the teacher.
I gently hold their little hands as we write their names together. I feel immensely proud when they’re able to write a recognizable version of their names on their own.
